LEGOLAND® California

Our trip to LEGOLAND® California!…

YAY, I’m finally getting this post up after our fabulous visit to the 128-acre theme park on May 21st. We were so lucky to get to visit on opening day of the newest attraction at LEGOLAND® California, Heartlake City. Since Rexy’s Birthday was on May 6th, and it was his DREAM to visit the park, we decided to keep the trip a SURPRISE for the kids. This was so hard to do but so worth it to see their smiling/shocked faces that day!

We drove out to Carlsbad, California from our home in Scottsdale, AZ. It was a fun 6 hour road trip… the kids watched The LEGO® Movie on the way to the there. When we arrived to Carlsbad we were soooo pleasantly surprised. The town is just lovely, right on the sea, about 30 miles north of downtown San Diego and one hour south of Anaheim.

The next morning we arrived at LEGOLAND® California at 10:00 a.m., parked our car and headed into the park. There were no lines and from that point on it was the kids who did all of the navigating for the day!

One of the first things that Rex wanted to do was drive a lego car. So we headed over to Volvo Driving School. There are 2 different driving courses: 1 for children ages 3 through 5 and another for children ages 6 through 13 (Harper tried that one!) The kids LOVED driving their own cars and earning their official LEGOLAND drivers licenses (which they wore around their necks the entire day!)

Early in the morning we also visited LEGOLAND’S brand new attraction, Heartlake City. Harper was in HEAVEN! Each of the 5 Heartlake City LEGO® Friends Models is made out of 30,000 LEGO bricks. They are absolutely gorgeous and Harper had to have a picture with each of them! The kids rode the beautiful new carousel and we caught a live showing at The Friends Forever Stage that Harper just LOVED!

We took a break for lunch early in the afternoon at the Fun Town Market Restaurant. The market-style restaurant had something for everyone… pasta, salad bar, steak sandwiches, etc. We were all happy with our delicious meals, but like any amusement park, food is very expensive. I would suggest bringing a small cooler for extra water bottles, juice boxes, fruit, goldfish crackers, etc. That way you can cut down on the food expense at the park.

The rest of the afternoon we visited Dino Island, Explore Village, & Imagination Zone. On the day we visited LEGOLAND, the park unfortunately closed at 5:00 pm. There were several areas of the park which we did not have time to visit. I would highly recommend purchasing a 2 day ticket to the park. We also did not see the aquarium or the water park. Hopefully next time!

One of the areas of the park that the kids really enjoyed was Imagination Zone. They loved building their own LEGO cars which they got to race against other kids on the lego track. It was nice for my husband & I to just sit on a bench and watch while they really had some fun! We probably could have stayed in this area of the park for another hour had there been more time in the day.

Another fabulous thing about the park is all of the LEGO play areas. Ride lines at the park the day we were there were fairly short and quick. But for days when the lines get long, each ride has a lego play area in the center of the line so while parents wait in line, they can watch their kids can create/play. It is a life savor!

A bit of history about the park:
LEGOLAND California is the first theme park in the United States created by Danish toy maker, the LEGO® Company. LEGOLAND offers more than 60 interactive rides, shows and attractions, as well as restaurants, shopping and beautiful landscape features specifically geared for families with children ages 2 to 12. There are more than 30,000 LEGO® models in the Park created from more than 62 million LEGO bricks. Models range from a Brontosaurus named Bronte (made of more than 2 million LEGO bricks) to a tiny rabbit in a magician’s hat in Miniland Las Vegas made of just four bricks. Here are just a few of my favorite lego models:

We all REALLY enjoyed our trip to LEGOLAND® California and hope to return next year. I’d love to go during the summer as well when it is warm enough for the water park- it looks absolutely fantastic!

Using Scrabble Tiles For Sight Word Practice

Rexy starts Kindergarten this fall and other than a LOT of trips to the library this summer we are trying to think of ways to help him with his spelling/reading/writing…

This game has been quite useful. I saw the idea on Pinterest a few times, and I found a $2.99 Scrabble game at Goodwill so I thought I’d try it. He LOVES it. Not only does he love searching for the letters, but the words are sticking. His spelling began to improve after just 2 times playing this game.

If you google “Kindergarten Sight Words” you’ll find some great lists of 2 to 3 letter words to start with. I think you could probably even start this game with 3-4 year olds for a head start.

Apple Bedroom

Just when you thought “theme” bedrooms were out of style. Actually, in my opinion they kind of are but that doesn’t mean that you can’t pick an element to repeat itself several times in a children’s bedroom. Obviously I’ve used the apple in this bedroom and I like that each apple is a different style/shape. I think the red, black, & white colors really make the room come together nicely!
