Rainbow Cupcakes

have you ever tried making these? yesterday harper and rex both decided to nap at the same time (AMAZING!) so, i decided to use up the food coloring from the homemade playdough i made over the weekend.

this was so much fun and easy-peasy! the directions:

*mix up a box of white cake mix. (i used Betty Crocker) preferably a recipe that uses egg whites and oil instead of butter (your colors will come out better and cupcakes will brown less.)
*divide batter into bowls

*add your food coloring. i used McCormick’s neon pack for my pink, green, blue, and purple. then i mixed the neon pink with the yellow from the original pack to get my orange. this is really just a guestimate until you get the desired colors.

*line your muffin pan with cupcake wrappers. i used silver cupcake wrappers to make “surprise” cupcakes and white/clear wrappers for the rest of the cupcakes:

*using a fork or spoon drizzle each color on top of the next. i used forks because i found that it gave me more control. do not try to spread the colors out on your own (it will cause your colors to mix).

*purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink

bake (as directed on your cake mix-i baked about 21 min.) let cool and frost them if you like.

even the wrapper is pretty!

enjoy!

Nightstand Makeover with Glidden® Paint

gliddennightstandbefore

A week ago Thursday I stopped over at the thrift shop to have a look. It was $1 Purple Tag Thursday and occasionally you can totally score! I ended up finding the solid wood nightstand in the photo above. I’d been looking for a small storage piece for the kids closet and thought this nightstand would be perfect for their socks & underwear. Either way it was only a $1 investment!

I quite like the piece the way it is (I know I’m probably the ONLY one), but decided it would fit better in the children’s bedroom with a makeover.  I went shopping for some Glidden® paint. I decided on a bright yellow color called Glidden paint Sunflower. I also purchased a quart of Glidden paint’s Swan White. I wasn’t quite sure how I would use it, but had a feeling I would need it!

I love picking out Glidden paint colors because Glidden paint offers a simplified palette that includes only colors people love! Other paint companies provide you with hundreds of yellows which can be downright overwhelming!

Both paints used were Eggshell Sheens from the Glidden paint Premium Collection. I usually use either Eggshell or Satin Sheens when I paint furniture.

After taking a few BEFORE pics of the nightstand I brought it outside to my work space. I always paint outside under a covered patio area. After taking off the hardware I quickly sanded the piece with an 80 grit sandpaper to remove the stickers and debris. After that I like to sand with a smoothing sandpaper, usually 120 grit.

I used a wide paint brush to apply the first coat of Glidden Paint to the nightstand. I try to keep the first coat as thin as possible, just covering the entire piece of furniture. Since I am working outside in AZ where it is hot and dry, the dry time between coats is only about 30 minutes. I added 2 more coats over the day until the nightstand looked fully covered with Glidden paint.

The nightstand was completely dry by the next morning. On Sunday I decided to make the makeover a little more interesting and used Glidden paint’s Swan White to turn it into a colorblock piece.

I used painted some painters tape to tape down the center of the Nightstand. Then I painted several coats of Glidden® paint’s Swan White until I achieved my desired look. After about 5 hours I carefully removed the painters tape and voila!:

I quite like the result! It fits in perfectly with the children’s bedroom decor!
