Floor Bed

Have you made the switch from crib to toddler/twin bed? I struggle with the idea of moving Harper to a twin bed. She sleeps so well in a crib, but at 31 months I wonder if it is time for a change? In the back of my head I’ve always loved the idea of a floor bed. A simple mattress on the ground made into a cozy space like this. Has anyone tried this? Pros? Cons?

What a good idea! Never thought about doing it that way! My daughter will be 3 in November so the idea of a bed has crossed our minds. I definitely want to make sure that she understands the concept so that I can make a big deal out of it and have her excited! At least that would be the goal! I say whatever works for the parents and child is best!

we started our just OVER 3 yo with a twin mattress on the floor. he has been LOVING it– no fear or issues getting out of bed (my biggest fear of the transition). we are actually going to make him a palette bed via pinterest with a free palette we found. he’ll still be very close to the floor and is also excited to help “build” his new bed;)

Oh yes. We did this with my son and my daughter when they were little. It worked out great and actually when my son received his bed when he was five, he tolerated it until about age 14 and he’s been on a mattress on the floor ever since (he’s 17!) LOL His choice. He has a bed, he doesn’t want it, so it sits in storage.
It was an awesome idea and I’m glad I did it. My daughter was overjoyed at the prospect of getting her own bed when she was 5 – now she’s 13 and would rather sleep on the floor, but she shares a room with her step sister until next year. At that point, it’s up to her. What do you think she’ll do?

We use IKEA’s KURA Reversible kid’s loft bed (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10123996) for our 2 daughters. The older one sleeps on top and the little one (2 1/2 at time of transition) sleeps on the floor underneath on her crib sized mattress. It works perfectly. I think it feels both safe and cozy for her since she’s on the floor and under sister. We have attached velcro to the underneath edge of the bed and attach some curtains all the way around the loft bed when the girls want to have a fort to play in. And when they don’t, the curtains come off easily and are stored away for the next time. Good luck with your decision!

Clever idea! Our son is 11 months and I know that time when he will need to move from the crib will creep up faster than we think. I think this is a marvelous idea. Thanks!

I think it’s a great idea too, but my only worry would be making sure there is enough air flow for the matress – which is important in order to avoid any sort of mold/wetness and bedmites…yucky

We just moved our daughter, at 3 1/2, to a twin bed using bed rails. She still loved her crib, wasn’t climbing out, but we found a great deal and pounced on it. There was no problem switching her – just made sure she understood that the same rules applied and we kept our routines the same.
