You could probably wrap small balloons with yarn soaked in clear glue and then when it dries pop the balloon and pull it out. Much like we used to do with paper mache to make ball shapes when we were little.
cool idea though it looks awesome!

Oh well I meant that for the ones that you can see through! Altough they look like they may have a wire frame underneath the yarn which would work too. For the other non-see through ones styrofoam would be perfect.

I was thinking the same thing (the balloon idea)

I made some last year if all different sizes that I wrapped around old Christmas ball ornaments. I used spray adhesive as I wrapped. They turned out awesome. They came in handy again a few months ago for this photo I took : http://teamboo2000.blogspot.com/2010/09/sonny-with-chance-of-meatballs.html

Here are some instructions for making the ones you can see through.

I'm definately going to make these myself – just have to figure out, where to hang them…

I actually did this project myself a few weeks ago. I used different sized balloons, and soaked yarn in corn starch, warm water and glue mixed together. It was a bit messy at first, but they're pretty beautiful hanging around the house. Mine are all white.(:

styrofoam actually dissolves in acetone.
use that as you will.
