Featured DIY - Nursery Artwork

this adorable nursery artwork was done by Wendy. Read about Wendy and her husband's inspirational adoption journey at wendy-steve-andg3.blogspot.com.

"...These are 3 pieces of artwork that I have made for our future nursery. We're adopting and don't know if we'll have a boy or a girl placed with us; the colors of the owl collage on right may have to be changed! :)
The first picture is of two collages made out of scrapbook paper. They are mounted on 10"x10" canvas.
The second picture is an acrylic painting. It's 3' x 4' high. The little birds are also made out of scrapbook paper."

To make an owl, you'll need:
*a canvas (I bought gallery-edged canvas; that means it's thicker on the sides as opposed to regular, thinner canvas.)
*scrapbook paper in various prints - try to pick colors/prints that complement each other. I made sure to look for some paper that was solid and some that had designs. Also make sure to get a color you like for the branch. I think I used paper that kind of looked like wood.
*adhesive strips - I bought this on a roll. It's the kind of stuff you would use with pictures in a scrapbook.
*acrylic paint - If you want to paint the edges of the canvas.
*thicker paper (like cardstock) to use as a pattern. (That way you can make more than one owl if you want and you won't have to start from scratch.)

1. Measure and cut the background paper for the canvas. Attach with adhesive strips.

2. Make patterns for your owl on the cardstock. I traced a salad plate for the body of the owl (because it fit really well on the canvas.) Make a pattern for the wing (I drew a shape like an eye.) Trace something round for the eye and the pupil. I think I also made a smaller pattern for the stomach-area. I don't think I made a pattern for the branch, but you could.

3. Trace each pattern onto the back of the scrapbook paper. I would do one part at a time and lay your pieces on top of each other. That way you can see how it will look before you attach it to the canvas.

4. Attach pieces to each other and to the canvas with adhesive strips.

5. Paint edges if you want to have them painted.
